Neila’s Story

Neila MacGean has Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension which means that she has to be on an oxygen machine with 8 litres high pressure every day. Neila was a nurse at Northside General Hospital for 6 years and later an occupational health nurse at Devco.

Her illness started with shortness of breath and then she fell and broke her back. During surgery in Halifax, she suffered a heart attack. Neila was recovering when she came back to Northside General Hospital for rehabilitation.

Her Oxygen levels are too low for her to walk around. There is no cause and no cure for her disease.

Neila has 1 son in Edmonton and a grandson Jack. She uses Skype all the time to connect with her family because she can no longer travel to visit with them.  Her husband Jack is always by her side helping her and she will be forever grateful to the staff Respiratory Departments at Northside General, Cape Breton Regional and Glace Bay Hospitals.
