Linden McGuigan of Sydney Mines was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in February of 2014. Linden visits the Diabetic Clinic a couple times per month. Linden’s symptoms were fatigue and thirst. When diagnosed, Linden was in the Armed Forces Infantry but is now on medical discharge.
Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps our body to control the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Without insulin, glucose builds up in the blood instead of being used for energy. Your body produces glucose and also gets glucose from foods like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, milk and fruit. The cause of type 1 diabetes remains unknown. It is not caused by eating too much sugar, and is not preventable.
Linden finds the Diabetic Clinic helpful and informative and gets the best of treatment from the staff in the clinic. He tries to eat healthy and keeps his sugars in check. He is a body builder and says he is now “The Strongest Version of Myself”.
