Tuesday, May 7th, at the Dobson Yacht Club in Westmount, organizers of Race the Cape 2013 announced three Cape Breton hospitals will be the official charities of this year’s boat race.
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, the Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation and the Victoria Country Memorial Hospital Foundation will be the beneficiary of an auction that will take place in Baddeck as part of Race the Cape 2013.
“Race the Cape is a sailor’s dream. Our goal is to welcome new and returning sailors to our waters and help raise the profile of world class sailing conditions in Cape Breton.” commented Jamie MacMullin, co- Chair of Race the Cape organizing committee. “But we also have a goal of helping our community and one of the most important institutions – our Hospitals.
Race the Cape will unfold over six days beginning July 17th in St. Peter’s. The race will consist of four days of challenging point to point racing through the amazing Bras d’Or and along Cape Breton’s rugged Atlantic Ocean. Currently, there are 30 entries, from Atlantic Canada and New England, registered for the race, 75% of its goal.
During the awards for the 2nd leg, known as the Barra Strait Cup, Baddeck’s Bars d’Or Yacht Club will host a live auction with all proceeds being donated to the Hospitals in the communities where the racers will stop; Sydney, Baddeck, and North Sydney.
“We are so grateful that Race the Cape is interested in helping enhance healthcare in Cape Breton through their event.” said Rochelle Hatcher, Executive Director, Northside Harbourview Hospital Foundation. “By working together with Race the Cape 2013, thousands of Cape Bretoners who rely on the services offered at our Hospitals will benefit from this world class race.”
Funds raised through the live auction will be split between the three Foundations to help purchase equipment and fund upgrades at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Northside General Hospital and Harbourview Hospital and the Victoria Country Memorial Hospital.
“We are so grateful to Race the Cape 2013 for giving us the opportunity to bring together the three Foundations for the first time, and creating a partnership that is mutually beneficial for all involved,” commented Brad Jacobs, CEO Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. “This partnership is a great step forward for us in working together to help Cape Bretoners receive the best healthcare, closer to home.”
